Book Description:

Mary Brown is in lockdown. She’s worn nothing but pyjamas for weeks, and is living on a diet of cake and wine. She’s rarely up before midday and spends her time watching every box set that she can get her hands on. Then: she has an idea… instead of just eating the cake, why doesn’t she judge it? She should organise a World Cup of Cakes.

With Juan, her trusty sidekick, she sets up the competition with meticulous detail, and the whole thing goes viral. Featuring: home dyed hair, talking to potatoes, Piers Morgan, internet shopping, an amorous neighbour, an angry ex-boyfriend and birdwatching. Oh, and loads of cake.

Jessica’s Review:

Mary Brown, the Adorable Fat Girl is back!  This is a series of novels by Bernice Bloom and you can either read the books as standalone novels or read them in the order they were written.  I have read several of them and plan on reading more.  Mary is similar to Bridget Jones (both are even British!) but Mary is actually very overweight.  But she knows it and chooses to live her life the way she wants, and that involves eating!

This time around Mary and Juan are in 2020 and currently experiencing living life in lockdown due to COVID-19.  She is just living life relaxing as much as she can: getting up midday, staying in pajamas, and eating cake!  All of a sudden she comes up with an idea to create the World Tournament of Cakes and to put it on You Tube. She takes it very seriously and then something unexpected happens: The competition goes viral and before Mary knows it, she and Juan are getting all sorts of attention!

This is the sort of novella that we all need right now: Something fun to read that leaves you laughing out loud at times and experiencing other fun emotions.  The situations Mary finds herself in are really unexpected.

What cakes are in the World Tournament of Cakes, and ultimately which cake  wins? Will you agree with the winner? You will have to read and find out.

If you haven’t given Bloom’s Adorable Fat Girl series a try, do it!  You will not regret it.  We can all use a laugh right now.

Book Description:

The Adorable Fat Girl needs to do something to get fit. What about yoga? I mean – really – how hard can that be? A bit of chanting, some toe touching and a new leotard. Easy! She signs up for a weekend retreat, packs up assorted snacks and heads for the countryside to get in touch with her chi and her third eye. And that’s when it all goes wrong.

Featuring frantic chickens, an unexpected mud bath, men in loose-fitting shorts and no pants, calamitous headstands, a new bizarre friendship with a yoga guru and a quick hospital trip.

Jessica’s Review:

Mary Brown is the Adorable Fat Girl and she stars in her own series of novels by Bernice Bloom. In fact there are 14 novels and each can be read as a stand-alone novel, but they also follow up with each other. I have read a few of the novels and have enjoyed them. I hope to read more!

This time Mary decides to take up yoga and go on a retreat.  And it is full of unexpected adventures!  Like Mary, I know nothing of yoga and have never tried it.  I didn’t even know what downward dog is: I had to Google it.

There was only one thing that bothered me in the novel: Mary brought WAY too many snacks for a weekend retreat, it just seemed too extreme. It was as if she was not going to be eating at all during the retreat. (Yes, they did eat meals, albeit very tiny ones. The snuck in snacks would have come in handy in this case, but not as much as she brought.)

Adorable Fat Girl takes up Yoga is a short read, I listened to the audio version and it was just under 3.5 hours long.  I enjoyed the ending and how it directly followed into the next Adorable Fat Girl novel which I have already read (Adorable Fat Girl and the Mysterious Invitation).

Many thanks to the author for sending me an audio copy to read and review!

Blog Tour: Adorable Fat Girl and the Mysterious Invitation

Today I share my review for my stop on the blog tour for Adorable Fat Girl and the Mysterious Invitation by Bernice Bloom. This is the ninth book in the series and I previously reviewed Dairy of an Adorable Fat Girl. I have enjoyed the books in this series I have read, I need to read them all!

Book Description:

Mary Brown receives an invitation to a funeral. But she has absolutely no idea who the deceased is. She’s told that he invited her on his deathbed, and he’s very keen for her to attend, so she heads off to a dilapidated old farm house in a remote part of Wales. When she gets there she discovers that only five other people have been invited to the funeral. None of them knows who he is either.

NO ONE GOING TO THIS FUNERAL HAS EVER HEARD OF THE DECEASED. WHAT IS GOING ON??

Then they are told that they have 20 hours to work out why they have been invited in order to inherit a million pounds.

Who is this guy and why are they there? And what of the ghostly goings on in the ancient old building?

Featuring Mary Brown, star of the Adorable Fat Girl series of books, in her greatest adventure yet.

This is book nine in the series, but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone book or as part of the series.

Jessica’s Review:

I had previously read and enjoyed Diary of an Adorable Fat Girl and jumped at the opportunity to read another ‘Fat Girl’ novel by Bernice Bloom!  This is the ninth book in the series, though it could be read as a standalone.  This one also has a genuine mystery to it!  Mary receives notification to attend a funeral of a man she does not know and has never heard of.  In fact, ALL of the people at the funeral do not know the deceased. No one knows what is going on and what will happen next.  I really wanted to see how this was going to end, and it delivered!

There were two time periods in this novel: The past dealing with the deceased’s life and the present dealing with Mary and the others at the funeral.  These two time periods come together to form a complete story. Once you know everything, it makes sense in a satisfying way.

This is an enjoyable read and there is a follow-up to Mysterious Invitation.  I cannot wait to read it and see how the story continues!  Be sure to read this series. You will love the “Adorable Fat Girl”!

About the Author:

My name is Bernice Bloom and I write funny novels about a crazy lady called Mary Brown in my ‘Adorable Fat Girl’ series.

Mary is funny, gorgeous and bonkers. She’s also about six stone overweight. When she realises she can’t cross her legs and has trouble bending over to tie her shoelaces without wheezing like an elderly chain-smoker it’s time to take action. But what action? She’s tried every diet under the sun.

This series is the hysterical story of what happens when Mary joins ‘Fat Club’ where she meets a cast of funny characters and one particular man who catches her eye.

The series follows Mary as she goes on safari, on a cruise, to a weekend yoga retreat and on an incredible adventure when she receives a mysterious invitation to a funeral.

The stories are laugh-out-loud funny and will resonate with anyone who has dieted, tried to keep up with any sort of exercise programme or spent 10 minutes in a changing room trying to extricate herself from a way too-small garment that she ambitiously tried on and is now completely stuck in. xx
