How Travelling Inspires My Writing

I’ve always loved travel. I was born in London and grew up in Essex. We regularly holidayed abroad and I was lucky enough to experience many countries by the time I’d hit my teens. Even as a child, I felt drawn to overseas adventure and different cultures. I had a deep desire to explore the world!

When I was nineteen, I made an overnight decision to move to Spain and leave my UK life behind. It was a choice that would fuel my wanderlust and eventually lead me on to living in many other countries.

The past fifteen years of travelling has connected me with so many like-minded, international people. My social circle throughout the years has evolved to form an eclectic mix of people from various cultures and backgrounds. My friends are global citizens, people like myself that have regularly found themselves living in different countries, with new connections and sometimes even alternative jobs to that which they might’ve had a year prior.

If I look back upon my life so far, it’s like I’ve lived many different lives. Each time, I’ve embraced new experiences, new friendships and had new work openings. They’re all so different from one another and represent a different stage of my own personal journey. I have so many special memories and stories. My experiences read like a bucket list, as do many people’s that live abroad and constantly travel.

Amongst many unique experiences, highlights include trekking mountains, riding horses along beaches and through paddy fields, partying on yachts, dancing at beach BBQ’s, being chased by a huge herd of water buffalo (not fun!), enjoying tropical sunsets on various islands and swimming in crystal clear oceans.

I believe that travel opens the mind and heart to understanding our world, it’s people and nature in a totally different way.

Had I stayed in Essex, I wouldn’t have had even a fraction of the experiences I’ve had so far. Those experiences are always filtering through into my writing and I believe they make it richer and give it more depth. I also have so much more to draw upon (in terms of cultures, languages and people – especially when it comes to international dating/romance) than if I hadn’t lived overseas.

My latest book ‘Passport to Happiness’ was inspired by some of my own experiences from living in Bali, Bermuda and Switzerland, the same as the book I’m currently writing – which will feature Dubai and Thailand!
