Blog Tour: The Other Mother by Heidi Field: Guest Post
Today I am taking part in the blog tour for The Other Mother by Heidi Field. This is the second in The Peasedsle Woods Killers series and these books sound good: They are right up my alley of interests. I’m going to have to get copies of these.. And the covers! The Other Mother was just released on November 19th. Today Heidi shares about herself and a little on her two novels.

Book Description:
Suzannah is pregnant with her third child. The first is in prison. The second is dead. How far will she go to keep her unborn baby safe?
When Suzannah learns she is pregnant, she feels like safety and happiness are finally within reach. Her handsome, successful fiancé, Alec, is over the moon about the baby. He proposes and pampers her. He thinks this is Suzannah’s first marriage and first child, but she’s keeping a few secrets. Actually, a lot of secrets. And they are dangerous…putting Suzannah in a position where she must choose who and what she’s willing to sacrifice to keep her baby and her freedom.
Drowning in her lies, Suzannah is desperate to bury her past, but her ex-husband, who abandoned her years ago, returns, stalking her and demanding to know what really happened to their daughter. When the imprisoned serial killer who lured and groomed her son, threatens to sell his story to the press, Suzannah feels like the life she’d built and the precious one she’s growing, teeter on a precipice. Now the two children she’s hidden from Alec may be the least of her worries.

I am so delighted to be here today. It means that my second book, The Other Mother, has been published. Whoop!
I’m in a real transition period of my life just now, older, post-children and relying on HRT to get me through the day. I feel younger and fitter and more alive than I have for years. A combo of meds, an obsession with the gym and my new-found LOVE, writing.
There is nothing like a new start in life to get your mojo back, and for me that began with a master’s degree in creative writing in 2000. It just takes one change, one step forwards, for life to shift. I met people who inspired me, made a forever friendship, and found out that I like to write dark, twisted stories that really push characters to the limits of their mental, emotional and physical limits.
The Other Mother follows on from my debut, The Other Boy. The stories are based around a serial killer’s accomplice, the first book looks at the parents of a victim of the serial killer, their grief, and the discoveries they make about their son when bodies of thirteen boys are dug up in Peasedale forest.
Book two, The Other Mother, follows the story of Suzannah, mother to the killer’s accomplice, a woman with many of her own terrible secrets, struggling to move forwards after the revelations about her son land him in a category A prison for twenty years.
I recognise that my writing is driven by my own experiences in life and the landscape of my own mental wellbeing. I have raised five children, and their teenage years are not yet behind me. I am in a period of flux, moving away from day-to-day parenting chores, to a time of freedom, seeking out a life that can fill me up and make me feel alive. That transition is precious to me, and I do not want anything to get in the way, just like Suzannah does not want anything to ruin the future she is building with her fiancé and the baby she is growing inside her.
I have always been someone who enjoys change, I like moving forwards, I like new homes, new adventures, new experiences. I am not afraid to put the past behind me and move on to something else. I think that life comes in stages, and often we move too slowly, resisting the change, and, finally, when we give in to it, we wonder why we didn’t get their sooner.
Choices play a huge part in Suzannah’s story, good and bad ones, and there are always other options that she could go with, like the truth, something that she pushes against with everything she has, until it is the only thing left. Either the truth will destroy her, or it will set her free.
I am a massive fan of Mel Robins and her Let Them Theory, not that it is easy to follow, but it does offer a different perspective to life which really resonates with me. It also adds a fun level to my characters, thinking about letting them be who they want to be, questioning what will happen if they are not, authentically, themselves. I want my characters to be relatable, believable and flawed, people you can root for but also despair at, and I hope I have achieved this with Suzannah.
The wonderful Lee Hyatt has given The Other Mother a stunning cover, which I am super proud of, and if you look closely, there is more to the image than initially meets the eye. The Other Mother is a gradual unfolding and unravelling of Suzannah’s life, with some shocking and dangerous consequences on route.
I hope you enjoy my story and thank you for having me today.
