There are monsters in the world.
When Violeta Graceling arrives at haunted Lakesedge estate, she expects to find a monster. She knows the terrifying rumors about Rowan Sylvanan, who drowned his entire family when he was a boy. But neither the estate nor the monster are what they seem.
There are monsters in the woods.
As Leta falls for Rowan, she discovers he is bound to the Lord Under, the sinister death god lurking in the black waters of the lake. A creature to whom Leta is inexplicably drawn…
There’s a monster in the shadows, and now it knows my name.
Now, to save Rowan—and herself—Leta must confront the darkness in her past, including unraveling the mystery of her connection to the Lord Under.
This book has been on my list for a while … I mean, that cover. Thankfully, the story does indeed live up to such a beautiful cover! While there are some flaws, the good outweighs them all. I think this would have made a better story if it were not actually YA. A lot of Leta’s and even Rowan’s problems could be chalked up to their ages. Teens are just stupid; we all know this. They don’t use their brains to work through problems, they simply let their emotions carry them into further complicating situations. That’s my main issue with this book. But other than that, I really enjoyed it!
Lakesedge is a gorgeous, rambling mansion that would fit into any gothic tale. Magic is weaved through in a way that makes me want to learn more and dive further into this world that Clipstone has created. But of course, as with my life, it ended on a cliffhanger and the next book doesn’t come out until September … so I’ll simply clench my teeth and wait until then so hopefully I can get the full picture!! Overall, this is a good one for any fan of gothic fantasy!
